FAQs
How much does a mural cost?
There are a number of factors which affect the price of a mural:
Complexity of the design
The simpler the design, the more affordable, and the more complex the higher the price. This is as it takes me less time to create the design. The size of the mural
Smaller murals are more affordable than large scale ones, although the difference may not be as large as some may think. I price up murals based on the amount of time a project will take, not on a price per square foot, and normally a mural twice the size doesn’t take twice as long, but could incur extra costs such as renting a scissor lift and higher material cost. The state of the wall
If the wall has a texture like brick, corrugated iron or needs prep work this will increase the price.Optional protective coat
For murals that are in busy commercial locations like restaurants, you may choose to add a protective coat on top of the mural. For far away projects
I will need to factor in the cost of travel and accommodation.
Murals start from is $1,950. If you’d like a quick quote, I’d be happy to provide you with one, feel free to call me on 6462353447 with the details, or email me at hello@marthaantonelli.com. Once I have the details for the project I can quickly send you a no-pressure quote.
How does commissioning a mural work?
This is how a project usually runs:
1. Free consultation
You have two options, if you’d like a quick quote so you can decide if a mural is a good fit for you, then you can fill in this form and I’ll give you a call to understand the project (or communicate via email if you prefer). Better still, if you’re within Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens or The Bronx I can pop in and do a site visit to understand the wall/space and talk through your ideas. For further afield projects this can be done over the phone.
2. Next, I’ll provide you with a no pressure quote and a plan of action for the project. If you chose to go ahead there is a deposit of 50% to book in and a simple contract.
3. Next, I create a mood board and listen to what you do and don’t like. I want to get a good understanding of what will work for you and your space. This is a collaborative experience and I want you to be thrilled with the mural!
4. Then, I work at the mural design, thoughtfully creating something unique and made with love. For hand-painted floral murals I work from real flowers where possible. Each design is unique to you and provided as a mock up within your space.
5. Then, I listen to any feedback you have. Most projects have one revision included in the price with more available for larger/more complex projects. I will provide you with an updated mock up of the edits if needed.
6. Finally, I come and prep the site protecting any floors or surfaces before using high quality paint to hand-paint the custom mural onto the wall.
What locations do you work in?
I am based in NYC (Brooklyn specifically) and happy to travel to Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Upstate New York, Long Island and New Jersey and Connecticut. I will consider traveling across the US or abroad for larger projects and I’m open to work in my native UK when I regularly visit.
Can I be involved in the design process?
Yes! A big part of my job is to bring your vision to life. Before I was a mural artist I worked as an illustrator, and have a huge background in taking the seed of an idea and guiding it through to a blossoming design!
What type of surfaces can you paint on?
I can paint interior and exterior walls; including brick, corrugated iron and textured walls. I can also paint murals on to windows.
Can you paint murals in all weather?
If it drops below 3 degrees celsius (37 degrees Fahrenheit) I cannot paint as the cold causes my water-based paint to freeze. I can paint in the heat providing it is not dangerously hot, and usually work a slightly different day to avoid the peak of the sun. If it is raining and the mural is not covered then painting must pause.
What type of paint do you use?
I use the highest quality interior or exterior latex paint, which I apply in many layers using paintbrushes. The paint is highly durable and can be wiped clean. This process typically lasts much longer than a spray-painted mural.
How should I prepare my walls for a mural?
Some walls are ready to go, but sometimes they will need to have holes filled and a primer and/or base coat applied. I’ll be happy to guide you through this.
What is the timeline to complete a mural?
I depends, often there is a queue as I’m usually booked up in advance. Once you are booked in I can provide you with the dates for the design, and the dates I will physically paint the design (the painting typically takes between 4 and 14 days). I will be able to give you a clear timeline at the point of booking and take projects on a first come, first served basis.
Will you travel?
Yes, I’m open to travel.
Can you paint an existing logo or design?
This depends, if it is your logo and you have permission- yes. If it is a design you do not own the rights to I will not be able to do this as it is copyright infringement. However, often a client brings me a few inspiration images and I can use this as a reference point while working on a unique new design.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in Graphic Arts from Southampton University and real world experience painting murals internationally. I have worked on designs for world-known companies such as L’Oréal, The Times, Airstream and the World Wildlife Fund. I am also certified on a boom and scissor lift.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
There are a few key things to think about:
What would you like painted? Think about if there’s anything specific you’d like me to include, whether that’s native flowers and animals, or your brand colours.
When is the deadline? If you have a specific deadline you need to hit, let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate this.
How big is the wall and is it textured? If you can provide rough measurements and a few snaps this helps me be able to quickly price up the mural.
Any logistical challenges? Does the mural need to be painted outside of business hours or is it complicated to access the wall?
How long does a mural last?
There are a number of factors that affect a murals longevity, including if it will be affected by weather (for outdoor murals). In general you can expect a mural to last years. I’ve painted interior murals many years ago that still look like the first day.
